Definition of Engineering Positions
Upstream
Upstream is known as the Exploration and Production (E&P) sector of the industry. The exploration phase is focused on locating and estimating the potential of an underground or underwater area. If that area shows potential, wells are drilled, and if successful, crude oil or natural gas is extracted.
Midstream
The midstream sector starts with the gathering of the produced product, then it is processed. From there, it is transported by pipeline, truck, rail, or tanker. From there, midstream companies either do the wholesale marketing of the crude or refined petroleum products, or store it in storage facilities.
Downstream
Downstream includes the refining of crude oil and distributing the byproducts for retail. Some of the products derived from crude oil include Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), Liquiefied Natural Gas (LNG), propane, asphalt, synthetic rubber, plastics, and fertilizers.
EPC
EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. EPC companies are contractors who aid in the detailed engineering design for oil & gas projects, procure the equipment and materials, then construct the facility.
Services
Oil & gas services are expansive, with specific services provided to the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. Some of those include oilfield services, engineering services, gas processing services, feasibility studies, consulting services and technologies.
